About Us

Our Mission

Here at Langston Hughes Elementary School, our mission is to foster a learning environment that values respect, responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance to succeed in our changing world.

Our Story

Langston Hughes Elementary benefits uniquely from our connection to both tradition and progress. Located on the west side of Lawrence, Kansas, our school is part of the historic Lawrence community with a rich history and legacy of educational excellence, as well as a thriving, fast-growing neighborhood where new families, homes, and opportunities continue to flourish. Langston Hughes Elementary School first opened its doors at the beginning of the 2000–2001 school year, as the 19th elementary school in Lawrence Public Schools.

Langston Hughes proudly offers a wide variety of services for our scholars with the help of our excellent team members. Art, music, and physical education teachers are on staff to instruct students in each of these areas. We have a full-time library-media specialist who provides both library and technology instruction and support. We also have exceptional specialized support staff including a counselor, social worker, school psychologist, speech pathologist, nurse, gifted consultant, and resource teachers. Langston Hughes is an inclusive school that serves students with a variety of identified special needs. Students with special needs do receive most of their support within the regular classroom setting.

At Langston Hughes we have maintained high academic standards and expectations for our students, staff, and families. We believe that all students can learn when surrounded by a supportive and caring educational community. Our scholars have consistently performed very well on local, state, and national assessments.
